What Are the Different Types of Breast Implants Available in Charlotte, NC?

  • Silicone breast implants are the most commonly used breast implant in aesthetic breast surgery. Silicone breast implants offer the distinct advantage of a more natural feeling implant that is not as prone to visible wrinkling through the skin.
  • Saline breast implants offer the advantage of being placed through slightly smaller incisions and the ability to physically add or subtract saline solution to achieve a particular look or firmness.
  • Breast implants, referred to as “gummy bear” or  “gummy implants,”  is a type of silicone implant known for its ability to maximize breast the outward projection of a breast implant through a form stable, highly cohesive gel filler – similar to what you would see on the inside of an actual gummy bear.

What Are the Options for the Incision?

Dr. Pratt will meet with you in private for an in-depth consultation, discussing the pros and cons of each incision location. The following are discussed as options:

Periareolar

Here, the incision is made around the outer edge of the areola in a semicircle. Larger areolas, and women with very indistinct breast folds are excellent candidates for this approach.

Inframammary

The gold standard in approaches for breast augmentation. The incision is hidden within the natural breast crease.  A versatile incision that allows for maximal precision in developing the pocket where your breast implants will be placed.

Transaxillary

In this case, the incision is made within the armpit through which an unfilled saline implant can be threaded. Although this approach keeps the incision off the breast, it is not without its limitations.

Getting breast augmentation was a long time coming. I was interested in getting a natural, proportionate look with the new Ideal implants and did a lot of research from plastic surgeons around the area for the results I wanted. Getting elective surgery is obviously a huge decision, and the most important factor is which doctor you choose. Dr. Pratt is very kind, warm, and caring. What I like about him is that he gives you very realistic expectations according to your body and doesn't prefer to use silicone due to its safety risks. Overall, I would definitely recommend going to Dr. Pratt if you are considering a BA.

Breast Augmentation FAQs

Can I breastfeed after breast augmentation?

Dr. Pratt can perform breast surgery in such a way as to preserve your breastfeeding ability. Through the careful selection of the incision site and placement of your implants, Dr. Pratt can protect the nerves in the nipples, allowing them to continue to provide sensation after your surgery.

How long will my breast implants last?

Breast implants can last indefinitely as long as they remain soft and they do not migrate. The implant shell, however, may begin to lose structural integrity after about a decade. After ten years, there may be an increased risk of implant rupture or leakage. But this doesn’t mean that all women experience complications down the line. If the implants do rupture, a revision procedure can be performed to replace them.

Will I have scars from my breast augmentation?

Any time an incision is made, there will be a resulting scar. However, Dr. Pratt does everything possible to place your incisions in areas where they will be the least visible. Incisions can be made within the inframammary creases where they are hidden by the bra lines, or they can be created to encircle the nipples with the scars hidden nicely in the darker colors of the areolas. A third option is to place the incisions in the armpits where the scars are buried within the skin folds.
